Half an hour later, I was comfortably full, and eyeball deep in the background check of Rosalie Dawson, our latest victim.

“Rosalie Anne Dawson, age twenty-one. Looks like she did two years at the University of Charleston, but didn’t return for her junior year. Parents are divorced. No siblings. Worked in retail up until a couple of weeks ago. Last known use of her bank card was Monday at the coffee shop here at the hotel.”

Jack had that glazed look in his eye he got when he was half listening. Chief Oliver had sent some of the surveillance footage he’d culled down, and Jack was watching it on the big screen.

“She’s a pretty girl,” I said.

I stared at the picture on my screen of the girl in a cheerleading uniform. She looked so young—hair the color of a mink’s pelt and amber eyes, and a smile that lit up the room. I didn’t know what had kept her from returning to college, but young women her age generally didn’t look for jobs cleaning hotel rooms. I was glad Jenson had volunteered to contact her parents.

“I’ve got several segments of video from the time Tobias Pickle arrived at the hotel to his room activities,” Jack said. “Glynna was right. His room was like Grand Central Station.”

He selected one of the tracks and hit the play button, and I watched as the image flickered and then the lobby came into view. The sun shone through the doors that were now locked, and there were several people milling about and waiting in line to check in.

“Tobias comes in just after noon,” Jack said. “And you were right about the briefcase. He’s got four pieces with him, and there were only three in the room.”

“There’s Jerry and Edie right behind him,” I said. “That confirms their story that they traveled together.”

“And look who else is there to greet him,” Jack said.

I waited a few seconds and a big man with silvery white hair strolled up to Tobias and shook his hand.

“Tom Powers,” I said. “That is so weird. Can a guy really be that okay with another man sleeping with his wife? You saw Tom and Lorraine together. They may not have sex, but there’s definitely affection.”

“It’s hard to imagine,” Jack said, “but people often lie to themselves to make something feel okay instead of examining how they really feel. It’s easier that way to cope.” And then he looked at me. “Easier in the short term at least. Eventually emotions have a way of coming to the surface.”

“Your psychology degree is showing,” I said.

“I try to use it every now and then so it doesn’t get rusty,” he said, winking.

“What happens after he sees Tom?” I asked.

“He checks in, then he goes straight to his room.”

He changed the camera view again and we watched Tobias in the elevator with several other people. He didn’t speak to anyone, and was one of the first to get off on the third floor. The view changed again and we watched him walk to his room, all four pieces of luggage in hand.
